Pirates, thieves, pedophiles and porn. Where did the internet, and its promise to improve our lives, go wrong?

Pornography, gambling, lies, theft and terrorism: The Internet Sucks (where did we go wrong) states the front page article of last week’s Macleans magazine (Canada’s equivalent to America’s Newsweek or NY Times).

Is this true? I wonder ….

I wonder how many times the author used Google, Yahoo or another search engine to do his basic research. In my opinion, the Internet has provided positive changes to society.

I found the article to be somewhat one-sided to be on the front cover of Canada’s leading news magazine. For example the article uses only one professor’s opinion to conclude that the Internet has failed to offer anything new to the world. “The internal combustion engine, refrigeration, even air condition, had profound impacts on our lives, making the impossible practical. The Web does nothing of the sort” … “e-mails replace faxes and phone calls. Online shopping replaces sales that used to be made through a catalogue. And for all but the most socially isolated, every hour spent trolling through chat rooms replaces an hour that might otherwise have been spent in real, live conversation”.

Very little is devoted to what’s working. The author spends little space to what is working. The internet has helped exchange data over greater distances at greater speeds than previous technologies. Medical doctors use the internet to send information over to diagnostic clinics for instant results; in my own life I have an instant encyclopedia at my fingertips … I could go on and on, but why bother?

Like every technology out there – there will always be both positive and negative aspects. To me, the internet is just another communication medium that has influenced several hundreds of current processes we do at both home and at work.

Yeah - I don't think I'm a complete loser and I spend quite a bit of time online......hmmmm...re-evaluating.....

I have been able to successfully block out the pirates (although I like SOME pirates!) thieves, pedophiles and porn (except Alfie, of course)

I have several websites that I use for information and resources for my business. I keep up on my training certification and continuing education requirements over the internet. Oh yeah, I have a website, too. I do payroll and child support deposits electronically many times every week at my job. I electronically file tax returns every year for months. And more! I cannot imagine how much more work all of that would be if not for the internet!!

Perish the thought! I wouldn't have time to blog at the office!

Gypsy, do I detect a bit of paranoia? Duck!

I can't sail, don't steal, and fancy adults. As far as porn goes, it's highly impractical to use the net when other mediums are available. ;)

I think these articles are designed to shock and outrage. It's quite dull to report that ordinary people are using the net to socialise normally, do some consumer research, and find shortcuts to things that involve drudgery and legwork, isn't it?

That's a problem with most media outlets today. They are so driven by audience ratings/circulation sales that they go into the business of "sensationalizing" stories. It used to be called tabloid journalism, however these days it's creeping into the "mainstream" media. More's the pity

I agree with Pete tends to say: the internet, the web, is merely a reflection of the "real world", the humanity, so whatever we find on this planet, is found on the internet too.

I'm always annoyed about this kind of articles that take only one angle. As you say, the internet is merely a tool, which can be used for good or bad. It is not an independent entity, it is what people make of it.

But then, simplified stories like this sell...
