We had perfect weather (almost) on our camping trip to Sandbanks Provincial Park, allowing us to have 2.5 sunny and not too hot days on the sandy shores of Lake Ontario. Upon our arrival some went to the beach while others stayed at the campsite and read.
On the first full day I awoke and noticed there wasn't a cloud in the sky. After a hearty camp breakfast we went to the beach where we swam, tossed frisbees, played badminton, ate lunch, read books, relaxed and put lots of sunscreen on. (for some of us a little too late). Afterwards, we grabbed supper, complete with vegetables, BBQ steak (for the carnivores in the group) and then sang songs around the campfire - led by six year old Autumn. I remember going to bed thinking it was a perfect day.
The second full day was pretty much a repeat, except that for supper. Austin made Spaghetti with an incredible tasting sauce. For dessert we had smores.... yummm. Oh, I also caught a thief (see pic below) stealing our bread.
On our last day we had planned to have a leisurely breakfast of pancakes before packing our stuff and stopping at the beach on our way out ..... but that never happened.
When we awoke, we could hear the roar of distant thunder. Austin and I were the first awake so we eventually decided to pack up. While we were getting the cars in order the skies opened and we had torrential rain that came down so quickly that the ground looked like it had a white aura (caused by the splashing of the raindrops hitting the wet and watery ground). Needless to say all our tents, gear and selves got totally drenched!! (Photo below taken just after the torrential rain had waned a bit)
We hightailed it out of the park and regrouped at a doughnut shop about 10 kms away. Over toasted bagels, coffee and hot chocolate we dried off a bit and then hit the highway towards home. En route, we had a beautiful sunny lunch on a outside patio at an English Pub in the lovely quaint town of Port Hope. This little town reminded me of Cheddar, England. After lunch we browsed the tiny shops but then noticed dark clouds approaching us so we jumped in the cars and headed for home. On the freeway the skies opened again for about 10 minutes making it very difficult to see anything, including other cars! At Anne-Marie's we unpacked the gear in the sun and then ate pizza in the warmth and comfort of her dining room while looking at more torrential rain outside. I left Anne-Marie's with my damp gear in the trunk of my car and my rain soaked tent with Anne-Marie's sister, Gisele who is taking it to Port Dover to dry off.
The entire holiday was a great success with lots of laughter and warped humour. It was lovely to spend time with these wonderful friends. It was especially a pleasure to meet fellow blogger Antoinette and her daughter Autumn, both of whom are now within my circle of friends.

Oh it sounds like the perfect camping holiday, Lesley!
Yes...including the rain. What's camping without getting soaked?
That piece of bread is as big as the squirrel himself...
It stormed here the other night for several hours - the light show was amazing. It seemed there was never a dark moment the lightning was so busy.
I was lying downstairs in my bedroom with the blinds cracked and, as I lay on my pillow, I could look up out that crack and watch the bolts of lightning over my head!
How far is Port Dover from TO?
PD is about 1.5 hours Southwest of Toronto when there is no traffic.
Hi, those sound like such perfect days, except for the rain, but you all survived it!
I enjoyed the picture of the squirrel having himself a little of your bread!
Thanks for sharing your trip, good summer days.
xx
Hi Lesley,
I'm sitting here with Autumn and we just read your post- actually, she read most of it outloud to me.
Autumn: What a big comment! What would you do if you went camping expecting a whole day with sunshine and got a whole heap of rain? You'd probably swim in the ocean back. Ha ha!
Me: It was indeed a lovely trip. Warped humour? Is there a better kind?
Ciao! We're off to some French music festival downtown at Dundas Square today and then I think we are off to Montreal for a few days. Oh, and Autumn absolutely wants to go to Centreville on Centre Island.
xx
AM and Autumn
I have never been, but a lot of people from this area love to go to Sandbanks. And hey, a little rain makes for a good story! :)
Perfect camping trip! Sun, good food, great company and a proper drenching - you need the last one for that essential masochistic element that camping brings.
Smores again! I really am going to have to try these. Must see if I can find something close to Graham crackers here.
Lovely report Lesley.
Margie, I'll send you some graham crachers! Send me your snail-mailing address... my email is stevian@telus.net.
mmmm...S'mores....
Sounds like a fabulous weekend Les!
And you deserved it!
x
hee hee! I mean graham craCkers!
Listen, you can't go camping with out the mud!..it sounds like you had great fun..you should have taken some of those stilletto flippers with ya..man-o-man..
What a great time you seem to have had, Lesley! After reading your last two posts, I'm really glad you've had some time away with good friends, as it sounds as if you needed that pick you up! What fun!! A bikers convention and then a camping weekend...and I'll bet with you, Anne Marie, Austin and her sister it was electric with wit and humour!
We've also been having terrific thunder storms here, but far too little sun to go with it. If you have any to spare, send some over here, could you?
Sounds like you had a wonderful time. Even the squirrels! And of course what is a camping trip without rain! Glad you had fun!
Zoe
Hi Lesley,
Your holiday sounds like it was so much fun!! It really is good to see how well you're doing and that your circle of friends continues to expand. You seem so much happier, too.
We still haven't made it out camping this summer - but it WILL happen. I don't even care if it storms. I love storms as long as they don't get severe and as far as I'm concerned we haven't had enough this year either.
Thanks so much for sharing your weekend!
xx
Stevie, that's keen, thank you so much for the offer! I really feel I'm missing something here ... off to email you.
Margie, S'mores are the nectar of the gods - when the gods want something sticky, sweet and rich.....oh my, I have GOT to go camping soon....
yeah, they are a bit on the orgasmic side of things...
get camping Rache! And Margie, when I send the carckers, there will be a recipe on the box that says you can make them in the oven.
Yeah, okay, you can... but there is nothing like a s'more in a wire basket toasted over the campfire...
some people like to just toast the marshmallow and put in in between the cracker on the chocolate, but if you have a two-sided, wire campfire tool that you can trap things in the middle with, that's the way yo go in my book.
Rache, Les, Dale, back me up on the oven versus campfire thing...
campfire!
Oy! Lovely Lannio! We've lost Ian of Nottingham! Call out the gaurds!
Where did our Ian of Nott go?
never fear, Ian is here

oh, btw, smores cooked like Stevie says are way better than just mushing the heated marshmallow into the graham crackers...
it is sort of like the difference between a finely cooked BBQ steak vs. a mucked up pan fried steak.
